A 1932 Southern Cross Nine Tourer
Southern Cross ‘Nine’ Tourer – 1932 8.9 h.p. 1018cc 4-cylinder overhead inlet & side exhaust valve engine with 4-speed gearbox.
This was the first of a long line of Southern Cross 4-Seater Tourer models, all looking very similar, before they were replaced by the all new 2-seater Gloria Southern Crosses. It was also the first, along with the Super Nines, to use the Coventry Climax designed overhead inlet & side exhaust valve engine. This model is recognisable from later Southern Crosses by its wings with no sweeping trailing ends and its mesh radiator grille mounted in front of the Art-Deco fluted surround. As this model used the same chassis as the Super Nines we do not know how many were produced. It cost £225 and we have recorded 23 of which 6 survive with their original style bodywork. For £235, Triumph also offered this model with the 6-cylinder 1,023cc side valve engine. One has been recorded but no longer survives.

A 1933 Southern Cross Sports 4 Seater
Southern Cross Sports 4-Seater – 1932 to 1933 9.8 h.p. 1,122cc 4-cylinder overhead inlet & side exhaust valve engine with 4-speed gearbox.
Very similar to the previous model but with a larger capacity engine, ‘swept’ wings and redesigned chassis. The price remained the same at £225. We estimate that 200 were produced and have recorded 55 with 9 surviving with their original style bodywork.

A 1934 Southern Cross Speed Model 4 Seater
Southern Cross Speed Model 4-Seater – 1933 to 1934 9.53 h.p. 1,087cc 4-cylinder overhead inlet & side exhaust valve engine with 4-speed gearbox.
Very similar again to its proceeding model, but this time with a smaller capacity engine, and the option of a free-wheel pre-selection gearbox. The price had reduced to £215. It is very hard to distinguish from the previous model, but if studied carefully the wing lights now have deeper streamlined bodies. We estimate that, together with the Southern Cross Sports Saloon, 800 were produced. We have recorded 36 with 6 surviving with their original style bodywork.

A 1934 Southern Cross Sports Saloon
Southern Cross Sports Saloon – 1933 to 1934 9.53 h.p. 1,087cc 4-cylinder overhead inlet & side exhaust valve engine with 4-speed gearbox.
This model is mechanically the same as the Speed Model 4-Seater Tourer, but with 2-door coupe bodywork. It was priced at £225. It did not appear to have sold well, this may have been partly due that it was offered alongside Triumph’s new Gloria range. We have recorded 63 with 5 surviving, of which 1 retains its original style bodywork.
