The 2019 Triumph Picnic
THE TRIUMPH PICNIC
Our thanks go to Martin Johnson-Howe again for organising the second Triumph Picnic at Wroxall Abbey and to Trevor Sherwood & Brian Bromwich for helping him marshal the event. Martin & our Club should feel very proud of this event and I would not be surprised to find that gives us some positive publicity and new interest in our Triumphs. Some 310 cars attended, including TRs from Holland and it was good to see a good and varied display of ten of our models amongst them. TR6 owners were celebrating 50 years since the birth of their Triumphs and came in great numbers; at least 50!
We can never match the numbers of post-war Triumphs, but we put on a fine show. Thanks then to Martin who brought his Gloria Six Light, Rob Green in the Flow-Free, David Mason in his Vitesse, Trevor Sherwood in his Gloria Saloon, Brian Bromwich with his Dolomite Roadster, Brian Bishop in his Gloria Vitesse Tourer, Derry Aust with the Dolomite based special, John Lowe and his Dolomite Saloon, Roger Janson with his Super Seven and Mike Goddard with his Two Door Gloria Coupe. A splendid, representative, sample of Triumph’s efforts before the war.
From my ‘post-war’ Triumph perspective, arriving as I did in our 1967 Mk 1 Triumph 2000 saloon, I thoroughly enjoyed the day, chatting with other enthusiasts, relaxing with a leisurely picnic by the car with Helen, her Mum Doreen & two of her village friends. It reminded me of the successful Standard Triumph International Rallies held in the 1970s & 80s that were run on a very similar ethos and since their demise missed by many.
We look forward to repeating this successful relaxed format next year which brings together Standard & Triumph enthusiasts, no matter what age or type of vehicle they own, or who wish to see and know more.
